Ghana has no space for ‘unnecessary violence’ Chereponi- Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has asked the chiefs and people of Chereponi, in the North East Region to bring to a halt the incidents of conflict and violence that have plagued the town.

President Akufo-Addo said the government’s quest to bring development to the North East Region will not materialize if there is no peace.

President Akufo-Addo was speaking at a durbar of the Chiefs and people of Chereponi, on day 1 of his two-day tour of the newly created North East Region.

“Thank you for the platform to appeal through you to the people of Chereponi. The time has come to bring these incidences of violence and conflicts to an end. The Ghana that we are trying to build does not have space for conflicts and unnecessary violence. Please let peace remain in this part of the country,” he said.

Hundreds of people including women and children were displaced in the renewed conflicts that led to three more deaths, several other injuries and destruction of properties.

Those displaced, mostly women, nursing mothers and children of school going age are living under very dire conditions in Gbintiri.

The overlord of the Dagbon state, Yaa Naa Abukari II, in March called for peace between Anufuls and the Konkombas in the Chereponi in the North East Region.

This was after a renewed clash between the two ethnic groups left three people dead, and many others displaced.

In a closed-door meeting with the Paramount Chiefs of the Konkombas and Anufuls, as well as the District Chief Executives of Saboba and Chereponi, Yaa Naa Abukari II, said the two communities can only develop when peace prevails.

In a statement from the Dagbon Traditional Council, Yaa Naa reminded the chiefs and the District Chief Executives that education is the key to development.

The Yaa Naa also called on the leadership of Konkomba and Anufuls in the country and elsewhere to help end in the conflicts in the area.
